it bums me out that dance music doesn’t have a more sociopolitical aspect to it sometimes b/c music and transcendent experiences in music are the things i hold onto when i feel like the world is totally fucked. especially with dubstep cause it’s so sparse and powerful in that way and it’s pretty much the last heir to roots reggae but the sometimes the scene just adopts roots signifiers cause they’re cool and doesn’t give any thought to them. like at that deep medi party the last song played was “babylon fall” by goth-trad but i distinctly remember thinking that these people aren’t going to make babylon do shit.
actually i just wish that lots of the music i love for its power and urgency and incredible depth wasn’t co-opted by smelly white guys with dreads b/c it also happens to be really good music to get high to.
but i mean you create a sociopolitical music scene and you end up with punk which i know is important to a lot of people but has never struck me in its modern form as anything more than a good excuse to be a dick all the time.
